Product Details

Star anise, scientifically known as Illicium verum and also called badian anise, Chinese anise, or Indian anise, is a star-shaped spice from the Schisandraceae family, native to Northeast Vietnam, South China, and India. Renowned for its pungent, sweet, licorice-like flavor and aroma, it is a cornerstone of Asian cuisine, prominently featured in Chinese five-spice powder, Vietnamese phở, and Indian biryani, while also enhancing desserts like gingerbread or mulled wine. Its essential oil, rich in anethole, contributes to its bold taste and fragrance.

In Chinese and Ayurvedic practices, star anise is prized for its therapeutic properties, acting as an analgesic, antibacterial, carminative, diuretic, and expectorant. It’s used to alleviate bloating, indigestion, and colic, and its warming, pungent, and drying energetics make it suitable for soothing respiratory issues like coughs or bronchitis. The spice’s gentle nature allows it to be used in remedies for children, often brewed into teas or syrups. Star anise is also a source of shikimic acid, a key ingredient in the antiviral drug Tamiflu, highlighting its modern medicinal relevance. This aromatic spice serves as a circulatory stimulant and is brewed into teas or incorporated into herbal remedies, making it a versatile ingredient in both culinary and medicinal applications.*
