Bacopa monnieri, commonly known as Brahmi, herb of grace, or water hyssop, is a perennial herb from the Scrophulariaceae (Figwort) family, native to wetlands across southern and eastern India, Australia, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. A cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine, it is revered as a "Medhya Rasayana" (brain tonic) and named after the Hindu god Brahma, symbolizing its sacred role in enhancing intellect and mental clarity. Traditionally used to boost memory, learning, and concentration, Bacopa is also employed to consecrate newborns in Hindu culture to promote intelligence. Its wide-ranging actions include adaptogenic, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anxiolytic, nervine, and sedative effects, among others, with moistening, warming, and sweet energetics that support its role as a nervous system tonic and rejuvenative herb.
